WANTED: Fragrance enthusiasts. Laughing Saint is making some changes to our product line-up. We are discontinuing a few fragrances, but also launching new ones. We’re looking for a handful of individuals to provide feedback about our new fragrances before they’re released. Message us if you’re interested.

Really excited about this! I had the opportunity to collaborate with @strikegoldshave_ and design the fragrance for Junto. I got to take the shave soap for a test drive and I adore it! Truth be told, this should’ve already been released. But I used a few uncommon and difficult-to-source materials in the fragrance, so I’m the one holding it up. But this one is worth the wait—trust me!

We are going to be a little delayed fulfilling orders in the next few weeks. Yesterday morning we welcomed baby Jordan as the newest member of the Laughing Saint team. His duties on the team are mostly symbolic at this point, as he still can’t quite grip a pipette or support the weight of his own head. He will start his apprenticeship as soon as he can sit upright and go more than two hours without napping. But for now, he requires a lot of hands-on training, so that’s what we’ll be focusing on.

Hey silly gooses! We just launched our new room fragrance and it’s utterly delightful. Direct link is in our profile. Use coupon code RMT15 for 15% off and free shipping (while supplies last).

You don’t need to spend a lot of money to try us out. We send out samples all the time—and end up fulfilling orders for full size bottles to those same customers shortly after. Just fricken try us out.

What does salt smell like? Nothing. Salt is an odorless mineral.

Despite that fact, salt notes (more specifically “sea salt”) have been appearing in fragrances since the late ’80s. Conceptually, it is not a new idea, but there’s no doubt that we are seeing salt notes appear more frequently across all types of fragranced products. But if salt doesn’t smell like anything, what are we smelling?

In most cases, we're smelling things that we emotionally/instinctively associate with salt. This is particularly true in the case of “sea salt.” Many perfumers try to achieve a sea salt effect via the use of “marine,” or “ozonic” accords—relying on the usual suspects: Helional, Calone, Melonal, Floralozone, Ultrazur (a personal favorite), Ambroxan, and Ambergris. Notoriously difficult to dose correctly, a skilled hand can make these materials sit perfectly in a well-designed fragrance.

Another common approach is to use materials classically associated with the smell of sunscreen. Examples being benzyl salicylate, citrus, and creamy/milky/coconut type materials. You can go a lot of directions with a sea salt inspired fragrance—herbal green, fruity, woody, fresh, etc.
For La Figue et L’Olive we went in a pretty unique direction, but does anyone know how we achieved the sea salt effect? I’ll give you a hint: castoreum. Actually, that’s more than a hint. That’s the answer: it’s castoreum.

As for castoreum, we can talk about that in a different post.

So we’ve already designed a fragrance inspired by music, but we may have found our newest inspiration. Check out “So Much Like Perfect” by Seer Believer @seer_believer - What should it smell like?
I think I’ll start with kephalis/vetiver/ambergris and build something sweet and subdued for the heart of the fragrance. You’ll need to get close to smell this one.

In 1960, Steffen Arctander described Fig Leaf Absolute as “delicately sweet-green, herbaceous and somewhat woody with a mossy undertone.” He also estimated that the annual production of the material was less than 200 kilos (or about 440 lbs. for folks that don’t do the metric system), but that production could be scaled up in case of increased interest. Well, Fig Leaf Absolute certainly sounds interesting and there’s undeniable label-appeal and marketing potential for fig-based fragrances—so why don’t we hear more about this material in modern perfumery?
It was banned by the IFRA in 2009.
The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) is the global representative body of the fragrance industry. It’s primary charge is to represent the collective interests of the industry and promote the safe use of fragrances.
Amendment 40 to the IFRA Standards recommends total prohibition of Fig Leaf Absolute, citing “dermal sensitization” and “phototoxicity.” Responsible, educated, and experienced perfumers understand the importance of making products that are not only appealing, but ultimately safe.
That being said, we did our absolute best to safely recreate the spirit of Fig Leaf Absolute in our fragrance La Figue et L’Olive.
